Canada Geese by Welland Lock, Salford Quays

waiting for the warden to arrive

eyes fixed on a patch of green

and a whole load of swans jumping the dinner queue

Signals are clear

dinner wont be long now

their feathered friends are moving….quickly

Clouds in the water

Salford, 15th May 2017

You could almost mistake them for the real thing

confused Canada geese try to eat them as an appetiser before lunch

they seem to float gently on the waters edge

easy pickings for our feathered friends

Bubbles arise from deep below

but clever fish they do not show

as anglers sit along canal bank

the hiding oxygenator fish have to thank

but with one move of a beak

illusions are shattered –

disappearing in ripples

across the water

Reflecting

A response to the reflecting prompt, taken at Salford Quays recently

Sunset Reflecting on Ontario Basin, Salford Quays, Lancashire UK

Taken by me using my Sony DSC-H300 camera – using sunset mode and continuous frame.

Had a while to wait for the sun to duck below the clouds, but i’m happy with the end result and the colours in the water and sky.

Anyone wondering about the buoys in the water – this is where the watersports centre do their windsurfing, canoeing and line surfing.

The day I bumped into a dalek

Salford Quays Lightwaves Festival December 2016

The day I bumped into a Dalek,

it was frosty by the quays

there was ice on th war museum airshard

but they weren’t the ones screaming freeze

They were meant to be playing games with th’cybermen

in the round place by the street

but the silver soldiers never showed up

they thought they would be beat

So instead they played some air hockey

with the kids and security guards too

and the Daleks found fame – taking part in the game

and drawing the match 2 by 2

And that night – they were friendly old fellows

as the locals they gave them a cheer

as the Daleks they played, and people weren’t afraid

as they found they had nothing to fear.

The return of the lights

Salford, 12th December 2016

I have had a wonderful few days in the run up to the Christmas festivities

Manchester’s volunteer choir were well received at the volunteer celebration at the Town Hall, whilst the smells and sounds of the Christmas markets have been in full swing.

However, today I had the opportunity to take in the Latest instalment of the lightwaves festival which returned (alas, without the bunnies) to Salford Quays and Media city

The Doctor has landed on the Quayside.

And his enemies the Daleks decided to join him 🙂

For world-annihilating robot like creatures – they weren’t half a friendly bunch.

There was the odd astronaut….

DSC_0004_4.JPG

and a children’s cartoon character or two, as Blackpool’s Illuminations landed on the dockside of Salford Quays, near to the Mediacity : UK complex.

The walkway to the illuminations was lit up by these very special Christmas trees.

and these floating boats produced a wonderful coloured light show on the waters of Erie Basin.

I liked the way they twinkled on the water and produced some wonderful patterns.

Ostentatious

Ostentatious

Definition of Ostentatious

Characterised by pretentious or showy display; designed to impress.

There are many places that meet this criteria, but you could say the refurbished Manchester Waterside comes close.

Firstly they cleaned up the basins, and placed lots of fancy housing around where the dockside warehouses are…whilst that was going on, they built a hotel on the dock 6, the nearest to the Trafford road bridge, built the bridge a sister and turned Trafford road into a dual carriageway

DSC_0004

Wildlife made its way onto the Dockside, whilst a line of trees followed a walkway commemorating the areas past and transformation, as office blocks, hotels and shopping malls made their way onto space where industrial and ship repair warehouses once stood

DSC_0003

The Office workers were given modern housing set by the waterside, and the owners paid a fortune to get the water in the basins cleaned up.  Old Bridges were given a lick of paint, and the Gem in the crown of the transformation – An Arts centre – the Lowry was placed in a prominent position on the canalside

The latest piece of the Jigsaw ?  arrived when BBC Manchester were considering a new base for their broadcast HQ.  This led to the development on the furthest part of the quayside adjacent to the Lowry by Erie Basin.  They called the development “Mediacity:UK” and hosts broadcasting facilities for BBC TV and Radio and ITV…as well as several production houses

Definitely a change from the Old Dockside…..

Ostentatious ? I’ll let you be the judge of that !

Take it to the bridge

In response to the daily post prompt Bridge

Millennium Bridge, Manchester Ship Canal, Salford Quays, BFK 2016

Wonderful pieces of engineering

traversing the great canal waterway

passing across them on a daily basis

I marvel at the way they work

Some, they lift until weights stop,

and some turn round as ferry anchors drop

but without them the canal would make travellers cross

and with no trade to speak of – it would be quite a loss.

Lightshow on the water

;DSC_0015

In response to the prompt H2O

Whilst the morning brings the odd boat sailing up the canal,

and the dredger cleaning the bottom

Sailboats traverse around Erie and Ontario – as

the Dazzling Snowdrop gives tours

The sun shines on the surface

creating rainbows where it can

as local wildlife teach their youngsters

the ways of the water

and as the sun scatters its beams on its way

the lights paint softly across the bay

A recent photo of the feathered inhabitants of the waters of Salford Quays, Gtr Manchester in the UK.  Taken by the pontoon opposite Welland Lock, near to the watersports centre, where the ducks geese and swans get their regular feed.
